Jill Scott is the only daughter of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott studied at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation her school, she went to Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was studying secondary education. Her dream was to be a English High School teacher. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying, her dream of becoming a high-school English teacher fell through. She began her career as a spoken-word artist and performing live at poetry readings. Then she teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. In Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. After that, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was a performer in The Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
